Shaggy Rugs

Because shag rugs are the most comfy.

Cotton shaggy rugs are great to use in almost any home. When picking which one you should use in your home or office you can either purchase it or you can make one of your own. The technique that is used to make these rugs can be completed for some people but with our help you can make it happen.

Before we begin you need to understand that some of you will understand everything that you have to do and could finish your rug much quicker than you thought. However, there are others of you who might have a harder time with it. Start off small and remember to have patience during the whole process.

Know Your Rug

Before you can pick up any of your materials you have to know where the shaggy rug is going to go. You might want to use it as a throw rug, runner, or an area rug for your kid’s room. If you are new to this then it would be much easier on you to start off with something that is small.

Knowing where it will be placed will help you to decide on what colors you will use to make it. For a kid’s room you might want to choose bright colors of pink, blue, purple or yellow. If it is for an office then it would be easier to use darker browns, tans, and caramel colors.

Another thing you need to decide on is how long you want the pile of the shaggy rug to be. The longer it is the more comfortable it will be for you to use. However, it might be harder to clean it later on. Know all of your dimensions so that you are able to get the right supplies.

What You Need

You can get everything that you need at your local craft store to make the perfect shaggy rug using the punched technique. This is easier to begin with and is different from the more popular – but complicated latched hook and hand hooked rugs. These more complicated methods require you to hook wool strips through holes of special rug canvases and can take quite some time.

When you use the punched technique you will be able to use cotton – which is easy to clean and is soft to the touch. You will need to purchase cotton yarn – which is easier to work with then wool and will allow you to create a thicker pile. Make sure that you also purchase a rug punch. Make sure that you purchase the type used for rugs and not wall hangings.

What To Do

The first thing you will want to do is to stretch the rug canvas or the burlap across the frame. Make sure that it is firmly in place and will not move.

To punch the rug you need to thread the cotton yarn and punch it into the back of the rug canvas. When you do this short pieced of the yarn will be pushed into the front. Determine how much you want to push through to create a shaggy rug that has either a short or long pile. However, you must be careful not to push through too much because it will bunch up when laid down.

Once you have used your tools and punched through the entire rug you will be ready to remove the frame. Fold the corners down and use the stitch rug binding tape to hold them together.

Place the backing on the bottom of the shaggy rug you have made and use the liquid latex to hold it in place. Make sure that you let it dry overnight before laying the rug down to be used.
